Treat conversational Search Console rows as clues to buyer needs. A long question can reveal a condition your service page does not explain: cost, timing, location, suitability or trust. Use it to choose a useful improvement before a clearer competing answer earns the enquiry.
Do not label every sentence or short follow-up as confirmed AI Mode traffic. People also type long questions into ordinary search. The report records available observations under its own rules, not a complete transcript of a customer's conversation.
What are conversational search queries?
They are searches written more like a request to a person than a short keyword. An illustrative example is “Which plumber serving [town] explains the call-out fee before an evening visit?” The conditions matter because they reveal what the person needs to decide.
Google's measurement guidance says an AI Mode follow-up is counted as a new query for the response's data. That helps explain why some rows can look conversational. It does not prove the origin of every long row in your export.
Does Search Console isolate AI Mode queries?
Use the exact report definition and filters available to your property. The overall Web performance report includes several search experiences. The separate Generative AI report serves a different purpose and does not provide a query-level conversation log.
Describe a length-based export as “longer queries” or “conversational-query candidates.” That is an accurate label for the method. Avoid calling it a measured share of AI traffic simply because a regular expression found many words.

Turn questions into action: Export, Group needs, Improve pages.
How do I use a custom regex filter?
In Performance, open Search results, choose a Query filter and select Custom (regex). Google's filter documentation uses RE2 syntax. Save the report date range and expression with the export so another person can reproduce the selection.
For queries containing at least eight space-separated words, try ^(\S+\s+){7,}\S+$. For a smaller site, a six-word inspection view uses ^(\S+\s+){5,}\S+$. These are review aids, not AI classifiers. They are less useful for languages where words are not separated by spaces in the same way.
Test the expression against a few known rows. Switch to “Doesn't match regex” if you need a complementary shorter-query view. Keep the filter label in a client report so the selection method stays visible.
How can I find question phrasing or follow-ups?
A separate inspection view can look for common English question openings with ^(who|what|where|when|why|how|which|can|does|do|is|are|should|will)\s. A fragment such as “yes, pricing” may also be worth reading, but its meaning is incomplete without the preceding conversation.
Do not fill in that missing context as though you observed it. A short pricing fragment can suggest an area to investigate alongside intake notes. It cannot identify the exact service or prove that a competitor received the next click.
Is Search Console a complete list of questions?
No. Google's dimensions guidance describes anonymised queries and reporting limits. Rare, specific wording can be missing from the query table. An export with only a few rows does not establish that people never ask detailed questions about the business.
Keep filtered totals within their reporting context. Do not calculate an exact “AI question share” from an incomplete, length-filtered table. Record what was available and use other approved sources, such as anonymised reception or sales questions, to broaden the content brief.
How do I turn the export into useful page work?
Group by the decision rather than repeating every query verbatim. Cost questions need an explanation of relevant price factors. Availability questions need accurate coverage and contact expectations. Trust questions may need qualifications, process details or evidence the business can actually substantiate.
For each candidate, save the query, the page credited in the report, the need behind it and a proposed action. Then read the page. Mark useful coverage, partial coverage, missing coverage or not assessed. That final state matters: a page you have not inspected should not become an automatic instruction to write a replacement.
A practical review sequence is:
- Export a fixed date range with the filter and property recorded.
- Review examples in the client's actual language and service area.
- Group related questions around a buying decision.
- Inspect the relevant page and confirm the business can supply the answer.
- Agree one useful improvement and the next step for the reader.
- Save the change date and review comparable observations later.
Can I reverse-engineer the whole AI answer from the query row?
No. The row is not the full conversation, answer or source list. If you run a manual test later, label it as a new observation with its own date and conditions. Do not claim it reconstructs the original searcher's result.
That new test can still help. Ask an illustrative question matching the need, save the answer and inspect the sources. Use a fixed baseline when comparing future rounds. Keep consumer-interface checks distinct from API research and preserve actual model identities.
How should an agency report these findings?
Show a small set of questions, the decisions they reveal, the pages reviewed and the changes agreed. Keep keyword performance, conversational-query insight and business outcomes distinct. A clearer page can support an enquiry even when you cannot attribute a particular customer to a particular query.
How are AI Mode follow-ups counted?
Google describes them as new queries for the resulting response's data. Use that documentation to explain the possibility of conversational rows without asserting that every one came from AI Mode.
What are anonymised queries?
They are query details withheld for privacy. Their absence limits what a query-table analysis can conclude. Preserve that limitation in the brief and report.
Should we copy long queries word for word?
Write a clear answer to the underlying need. Group related phrasing naturally and supply accurate detail instead of repeating a sentence to match a filter.
Can we change the tracked questions every month?
Keep a stable core for comparison. Save new ideas separately and create a dated baseline when the core changes materially. Otherwise a changing question mix can resemble improvement or decline.
How can WhatBuyersAsk use client questions?
The portal supports reviewed important questions supplied by the client. Selected wording can be retained in the research scope with provenance. Local editorial patterns, client-supplied questions and observed corpus evidence stay distinct, so the brief does not invent demand.
Turn the next export into a page improvement your client understands. Read the research process, create your workspace, or sign in to continue.
