Which directories does ChatGPT cite for local businesses?

Find the directories behind real buyer answers, verify your listings and improve the details customers use to choose a local business.

Be where AI looks. A cobalt racing car and friendly AI assistant illustrate the business decision.

Your next enquiry may start on a directory page you have not opened for years. When an AI answer names a competitor, inspect the linked sources before commissioning more website copy. An outdated profile on a relevant directory can leave buyers with incomplete information about the service you actually offer.

There is no universal directory list that wins every trade, town and assistant. Build your priority list from repeated observations of your own buyer questions. Then verify the exact business profile and improve the information a customer needs to make contact.

Does ChatGPT use Yelp?

It can cite Yelp, as well as business websites, trade directories and other sources. BrightLocal's local AI study observed different source patterns across services and locations. That is vendor research with a defined sample, rather than a promise about your next answer. Use it to justify checking the sources in your market, not to assume one directory always dominates.

Start with a question such as “Which plumbers serving [town] explain emergency call-out charges?” Save the answer and open every citation. Confirm that the page really supports the statement beside it. A domain appearing in a source list does not prove that your own listing influenced the answer.

Where does an assistant get information about a local business?

Sources may include the business's own pages, public profiles, professional listings, reviews and local guides. Keep a distinction between a page being cited, the business being named and the business being positively recommended. They answer different questions about the buyer's journey.

A directory can be cited for a general list without linking your profile. A service page can be cited for a useful explanation without recommending the provider. Record the exact page and relevant passage so an agency can explain what happened without overstating it.

Which local directories should we check first?

Begin with places that serve your actual customers and accept businesses like yours. Google Business Profile and a relevant trade or professional register may matter; Yelp, BBB, Angi, Healthgrades, Justia or a property portal may be candidates in some markets. Availability, eligibility and usefulness vary. A US directory list is not automatically useful for an Indian or UK business.

Make a shortlist using five fields: directory name, observed source URL, matching service area, exact business profile and a useful next action. If a profile cannot be found or a page cannot be fetched, mark it unavailable or unverified. Do not turn that into a zero rating or a claim that the business is absent everywhere.

How do we build a directory list from buyer questions?

Choose a small starter set covering the services that matter commercially. Include a place and a need: emergency availability, price factors, credentials or a particular job. Keep questions that name your brand separate from those that ask for a provider without supplying a name.

  1. Save the exact questions and the service area you intend to test.
  2. Run them in relevant assistants, keeping the service and session conditions recorded.
  3. Save full answers, dates and source links, including unsuccessful checks.
  4. Group recurring source domains, then inspect the exact pages.
  5. Prioritise relevant, legitimate profiles with inaccurate or incomplete business details.

These are observation counts within your test, not measured directory traffic or a popularity leaderboard. A small sample can guide an inspection. It cannot establish market share or prove that buying a listing will create recommendations.

How do I improve a business listing?

Confirm ownership through the directory's normal process, then correct the real business name, service area, contact route, hours and services. Use current photographs of actual work where permitted. Explain prices or the process for obtaining a quote when the platform supports it. Remove expired offers and avoid claiming locations where you do not operate.

Consistency should reflect the truth. A business with separate legitimate locations may need location-specific details. A service business that does not accept visitors should follow the platform's address rules. Do not force every profile to show a public address simply to make the fields identical.

Request honest reviews neutrally and follow each platform's policy. Google's review policy prohibits fake engagement, incentives and selective positive-review requests. A useful profile improvement plan should never depend on fabricated feedback.

Does being cited in one assistant mean we appear in another?

No. Save each service's observations separately. The useful next action is to identify a recurring, relevant information gap, rather than average unlike results into one unexplained number. A change on a directory may also take time to appear in search and may never affect a particular answer.

Review the shortlist on a schedule that fits the business. Correct factual mistakes promptly, and repeat the fixed questions after important changes. Keep new questions in a separate group until you deliberately revise the baseline. Our recommendation-check guide explains a practical way to keep that comparison honest.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?

Do not assume which review source informed a specific answer. Inspect its citations and the underlying page. Keep Google Business Profile accurate for customers and Google's local results while checking other relevant sources independently.

Does ChatGPT cite real sources?

Search-enabled answers can link to public pages. Open those pages and verify the claim. A real URL can still be irrelevant, outdated or insufficient support for the answer.

Should we pay for every directory we find?

No. First check relevance, listing eligibility, customer value, price and the exact improvement available. An observed citation does not establish a return on a paid placement.

How often should we recheck?

Set a consistent review rhythm and add spot checks after factual changes. Keep the question set, service area and measurement method visible so a client can understand any movement.

How can WhatBuyersAsk help an agency?

For Local business AEO, the portal uses the client's saved service areas and an explicitly labelled editorial question library. Directory findings retain supporting evidence and remain separate from AI-answer citation scores. They help you prepare a focused profile and content plan without treating unavailable evidence as a failure.

Turn the next source review into a useful client conversation: what buyers asked, where information came from and which facts need attention. Read the research process, create your agency workspace, or sign in to work with an existing client.
